Sun Microsystems, Inc. is a manufacturer of computer systems (many company's Sparc microprocessors their base, but with other x86 processors from Intel and AMD products), computer-based hardware, software and related services. The company was founded in 1982 and is located in Santa Clara, California.
Sun trades on the NASDAQ under the symbol SUNW. The company employs approximately 34,600 employees and a turnover of 13.783 billion U.S. dollars and the network –Income of more than 473 million U.S. dollars to the U.S. since 2007.
Over the years, Sun has developed and supports many operating systems. The first Sun workstations come with Unisoft V7 Unix, but soon moved to Sun SunOS, a closed-source operating system developed by BSD UNIX. In late 1980, however, AT & T, at which time the owner of UNIX System V, 20% of the sun obtained, and the two companies jointly developed the UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4). SVR4, was used asBasis of the next operating system, Sun's Solaris, 2 Since then, through numerous updates and Solaris since 2005 most of the Solaris source code was released under an open source under the CDDL license. Since 2002, Sun has worked well with Linux, and supports Red Hat Linux and SuSE Linux on some of their systems.
Another Sun-developed technology is the Java platform. The Java platform consists of three main components: the Java programming language,Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and Java Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). The design of the platform has been developed since 1998 by a formalized Community Process as Java Community Process (JCP). In November 2006, Sun has announced plans to release its implementation of Java under the GPL, and suffered its Java compiler and JVM released under the GPL.
Sun is also the owner of the office suite StarOffice, which obtained when it acquiredStar Division Software Company in 1999. Although the source of StarOffice software is closed, it forms the basis for OpenOffice.org, an open source office suite is licensed under the LGPL.
